To do a quality translation you need a professional linguist - a translator - who has very good knowledge of the 2 languages and who knows the vocabulary of the subject (technical, medical, legal, etc.) that is being translated. How are translations made?

The professionals

To do a quality translation you need a professional linguist - a translator - who has very good knowledge of the 2 languages and who knows the vocabulary of the subject (technical, medical, legal, etc.) that is being translated. The translator should have native knowledge of the target language (the final language).
Then, a similarly qualified editor will review and proofread the job.

Say you have a technical manual of a complex computerized machine used in the oil industry. The translator has to know enough about engineering, electronics, IT and even oil industry to understand what he is going to translate, and he needs to know the appropriate vocabulary and jargon of the equipment and of the industry. The same with a blood analyzer – chemistry, pharmacology, medical science have to be mastered, on top of the mechanical, electrical and IT details of the machine itself. A dictionary is totally useless if the translator does not know which word he should pick, out of the many choices offered by the dictionary.

Project Management

A project manager deals with the client and with the translator and editor, and will coordinate schedules, resources, tasks, changes to the job, etc.
